We’ve been lucky enough to stay at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Ko Olina five times. And every time we return, it feels like coming home. There’s something about this place—the mix of Disney magic, Hawaiian spirit, and that perfect Ko Olina sunset—that keeps pulling us back.
Aulani is more than a resort. It’s a base for exploring all that Oahu has to offer, from the wild North Shore to the lush valleys of Kualoa. Whether you’re visiting with toddlers, teens, or grandparents, this island has a rhythm that fits every traveler. Here’s how we spent our perfect week at Aulani, mixing relaxation, adventure, and plenty of shave ice.
Day 1: Arrival and Ease into Island Time
After a long flight, there’s no need to rush. Check in, drop your bags, and let island time take over.
Grab a poke bowl or flatbread from Ulu Café, slip into your swimsuits, and head straight for the lagoon. The water at Ko Olina is calm and clear, perfect for your first dip. As the sun starts to sink, find a spot along the path between lagoons for your first Ko Olina sunset.
GFR Highlight: Ease into island time. The adventure can wait until tomorrow.
Day 2: West Oahu and the Sunset Snorkel Tradition
Mornings at Aulani are made for slow starts. We like to float the lazy river, race down the water slides, and let our daughter conquer the Menehune Adventure Trail before lunch. It’s part scavenger hunt, part storytelling, and totally Disney.
Afternoons are perfect for recharging. Maybe a nap, a Dole Whip, or a poolside shave ice.
Then comes our tradition: the Ocean Joy Sunset Snorkel Cruise from Ko Olina Marina. We’ve done this cruise on four of our five trips, and it never disappoints. There’s snorkeling, great food, and a front-row seat to the best sunsets on the island. Dolphins often make an appearance, and every single time it feels just as magical.
GFR Highlight: Don’t miss a Ko Olina sunset on the water. It’s Hawaii at its best.

Day 3: North Shore Adventure
Today’s the day to hit the road. Drive north on H-2 through pineapple fields toward Haleiwa Town. Stop for coffee, browse the surf shops, and then head to Waimea Bay or Sunset Beach. The waves can be huge in winter and calm in summer. Either way, the views are stunning.
One of our favorite hidden gems is a quiet stretch near Mokulē’ia, where parts of Lost were filmed. It’s often empty, and the turquoise water feels worlds away from the crowds.
Lunch is easy: Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck for garlic shrimp, followed by Matsumoto’s shave ice for dessert.
GFR Highlight: Pack towels, swimsuits, and patience. The North Shore rewards wanderers.

Day 4: Kualoa Ranch and the Windward Coast
If you’ve ever dreamed of driving through Jurassic Park, this is your day. Kualoa Ranch is one of Oahu’s most scenic spots, and we loved the Raptor Tour, an ATV-style ride through lush valleys and movie locations. Even if you don’t choose that tour, the Movie Sites and Jungle Expeditions are fantastic alternatives.
Afterward, continue your drive along the Windward Coast, one of the most beautiful routes in Hawaii. Stop for photos at Kualoa Beach Park or grab lunch at a roadside café. If time allows, visit Waimanalo or Lanikai Beach, famous for its soft sand and electric blue water.
GFR Highlight: The drive along Oahu’s east coast rivals any coastal road in the world.

Day 5: Honolulu and Diamond Head
Set the alarm early for Diamond Head. The trail can get crowded, but the panoramic view of Honolulu from the top makes every step worth it. Reserve your time slot before you go, and bring water. It’s a short but steep climb.
After the hike, spend a few hours exploring Waikiki. Grab lunch with a view, shop along Kalākaua Avenue, or visit Pearl Harbor if you want a deeper look into history.
By late afternoon, head back toward Ko Olina for a quieter evening. Stop by for happy hour at Monkey Pod.
GFR Highlight: Climb early, hydrate often, and enjoy one of the best views in Hawaii.

Day 6: The Pink Pillbox and Resort Recharge
If you want one more hike, try the Pu’u O Hulu or Pink Pillbox Trail, just a short drive from Aulani. It’s a steep climb, but rewards you with sweeping views of the ocean and the Waianae coast. We did it in the late morning and were glad we brought water. It’s hot but unforgettable.
Afterward, return to the resort for a well-deserved break. Float the lazy river, let the kids loose at Aunty’s Beach House, or simply relax under a palm tree. You’ve earned it.
As evening falls, you’ll likely hear drums and chants drifting across the resort. The KA WA‘A Luau is in full swing. We’ve never attended, but we’ve enjoyed the music from our balcony many times. The storytelling and atmosphere sound incredible from a distance, and the energy makes the whole resort come alive.
GFR Highlight: Balance adventure with relaxation. Aulani days are part of the magic.

Day 7: Farewell and Family Moments
Our last day is always slow and sentimental. Start with a character breakfast at Makahiki, then take one final float through the lazy river. Aulani’s details, like hidden Menehune statues, soft Hawaiian music, and the smiles from cast members, always remind us why we keep coming back.
As the sun sets over the Ko Olina lagoons, we make one final walk along the path and promise ourselves we’ll return.
GFR Highlight: End your trip with gratitude. Few places blend joy and rest like Aulani.

Aulani or Disney Cruise? Why Not Both
If you love the mix of Disney service and island adventure, consider pairing Aulani with a Disney Cruise to or from Honolulu. Aulani gives you immersive Hawaiian culture and resort relaxation; a cruise lets you explore multiple islands without packing and unpacking. It’s the ultimate Hawaiian combination.
GFR Highlight: Stay, sail, and savor. It’s the best of both worlds.
Final Thoughts
Aulani is that rare place where you can do everything or nothing at all. Spend a day chasing waterfalls and sea turtles, or stay by the pool with a mai tai in hand. Either way, Oahu delivers the balance every family craves—relaxation, beauty, and adventure.
What makes Aulani truly special is how Disney designed the resort to honor the people, culture, and natural beauty of Hawaii. From the artwork to the architecture, every detail feels authentic. The storytelling is grounded in Hawaiian tradition, with Disney touches that are subtle rather than overwhelming. You’ll see Mickey now and then, but never at the expense of the islands’ spirit.
Our five visits have taught us one thing: the island always gives back exactly what you need. And that’s why we’ll keep returning, again and again.
