About GFR Travel
Hey, I’m Gino — the “G” in GFR Travel.

Once a Navy fighter pilot, then an airline pilot, now a software nerd with a passport that rarely rests. I’m a husband, girl dad, and obsessive travel planner who believes luxury should be savored, not overspent. GFR Travel is my way of sharing how we’ve seen the world as a family, often in style, always on a smart budget.
GFR stands for “Gino From Reno,” but it’s grown into something bigger.
A space for families like ours who want smart travel, where you can get a touch of luxury, even when you’re squeezed into row 29D during school holidays.
How this all started
I was the kid who’d stare out the airport window for hours, watching planes take off and land. I caught the travel bug early, from a few lucky trips to Europe when travel was still a luxury, not an expectation.
My Navy days took me across Eastern Asia and the Middle East. After that, the airlines opened up a new world of adventure. My wife and I made the most of it, hopping on flights whenever the loads looked good and jetting off to places like Paris or Tokyo for a spontaneous weekend.
When our daughter was born, people told us to kiss travel goodbye.
We said, “Hold my passport.”
She had a passport before she could crawl. Since then, we’ve traveled the world as a trio — first class to Mexico, road-tripping the Rockies, snorkeling in Australia, and making chocolate in Costa Rica. We’ve seen it all, done quite a bit of it on points, and learned a ton along the way.

Why GFR Travel exists
When I was flying, I started learning the insider tricks, from upgrades, sweet spots, award routing, to when to skip the “deal.” Later, I realized something else: the world doesn’t stop just because you have a stroller or a tween with homework. You adapt and pivot.
We’ve booked 5-star resorts for less than coach fare. We’ve had Plan B travel moments that turned out better than Plan A. And we’ve taken those experiences and turned them into a travel style that blends smart planning with beautiful memories.
I started GFR Travel to help families do the same.
This blog is for families who:
- Want honest, real talk about travel — the wins, the wipeouts, and the “are you kidding me?” moments.
- Want to stretch their points, miles, and money — without decoding loyalty program hieroglyphics.
- Want to make beautiful memories — and capture them in photos that don’t sit forgotten in a camera roll.
